Many people do. They are soft, cuddly, huggable, adorable, and irresistible. It's literally love at first sight. Children can't resist them and will sleep easy with their favorite penguin by their side. For newborn babies, the contrasting black and white colors of a penguin are great for developing their eyes. Adults love them for their cute faces and become avid collectors. I actually think that the appeal of penguins is what made Happy Feet and Happy Feet 2 such popular movies. The 2005 documentary, March of the Penguins, made people aware how the life of Emperor penguins can be heroic. Living in the harsh, deep freeze of Antarctica, the penguins mate, have a little baby penguin and take turns to look after their little one until it grows up to be an adult penguin whereupon the cycle starts again. Among the different types of penguins, the Emperor penguin is the largest species, averaging at about 3'7" tall and weighing in at 75 pounds. The smallest penguin species is The Little Blue Penguin with an average height of 1'4" and weighing in at 2.2 pounds. The Emperors live in cold climate, whereas The Little Blue Penguins live in the warmer waters near New Zealand and South Australia. There are approximately 17-18 types of penguins.

The penguins' greatest enemy is oil spill. Oil spills are a challenge to penguins because if they get caught in a big oil slick, oil will cling to their feathers. They can't clean themselves because they run the risk of ingesting the oil. The other greatest enemy is icebergs. When chunks of icebergs break apart, sometimes they obstruct the penguins normal routine and may be unable to reach food and shelter.
